Joe Huey: Teacher in classroom, on the court

The car cut its way across the Texas plains on its way to Memphis, Tenn., where the young couple would start a home together.

They tugged their new life in a trailer, but as they moved through Dallas that day, a greater force pulled against them.

"Our trailer axle broke, and we've been here ever since," Sara Huey said. "Everything worked out just like it was meant to be, I guess."

Joe Huey and his wife spent the next 51 years in Dallas, where he taught history and coached basketball from the junior high ranks to college until retiring in 2001.

Mr. Huey died of heart failure Aug. 17. He was 78.

Services were Wednesday at Restland Funeral Home in Dallas.

Just days after graduating from what is now the University of Memphis, Mr. Huey joined the Army and was assigned to the White Sands proving grounds in New Mexico.

After his release in 1956, he and his wife began the drive to Memphis, Tenn., where the family would live.

That's when they were pulled to Dallas.

Mr. Huey's résumé included stints as a basketball coach and history teacher at Spence Junior High and 19 years at Sunset High School. Mr. Huey was also an assistant on the 1962 Thomas Jefferson team that won the championship that year.

At Mr. Huey's memorial service last week, former students recounted their teacher's efforts to groom them into men. One of those students, Michael Hinojosa, grew up to become the superintendent of Dallas schools.

"Coach Huey was a man I really admired. When I played on his basketball team, he said 'You're short, but you're slow too, but you're also one of the smartest players I've ever coached,' " Dr. Hinojosa said.

"That gave me a lot of confidence, and I eventually followed in his footsteps to become a basketball coach as well as a history and government teacher."

Mr. Huey was later an assistant for Chester Story's Richland College team that won the 1999 NJCAA Division III title.

As an assistant on Mr. Story's staff at Brookhaven and later Richland College, Mr. Huey dispensed advice to his younger players and broke up tense moments with his dry, witty humor.

"He could break you up with the things he'd say, his one-liners," Mr. Story said. "Every once in a while he would get over to the side during a workout and stand on his head. Of course we were pretty serious during workouts, but he'd give them a break and it was a good break for everybody."

In 2006, Mr. Huey required full-time nursing care after a heart attack and stroke. Friends, former players and former coaching adversaries came to lend support or a kind word at his bedside.

Even in his last days his friend was eager to talk basketball, Mr. Story said.

"It was never about 'I'm hurting, let's think about me.' He was always thinking about other people," Mr. Story said. "Even though he could hardly speak, he would raise his head a little bit and give us a smile and a wave and tell us he loved us.

"He wanted to tell us that because he knew it might be the last time."

In addition to his wife, Mr. Huey is survived by daughters Jane Huey of Dallas, Jody Rindfleisch of Dallas, and Jill Rose of Tyler; sisters Jan Clark of Tupelo, Miss., Marjorie Crane of Memphis; brother, Howard Huey of West Memphis, Ark.; and four grandchildren.

Dear Sunset Alumni Association,

First of all, on behalf of myself and the Bisonette organization, I would like to thank the Sunset High School Alumni once again for being sensational contributors towards the Bisonette organization. Your contribution of $800.00 has paid for 4 more field uniforms.  We started out with 12 girls my first year.  This will be my fourth year with Bisonettes.  We have now grown to 27 Bisonettes.  I think that this is turning in to a very successful program.  The girls find that renting the field uniform per semester instead of having to purchase it, is sometimes the only way to accomplish a dream with the Bisonettes at Sunset.  There will never be a girl turned away from the program if she is not able to afford the standard uniform to be in drill team.  Through your contributions, and fundraisers that we have on a yearly basis, we are able to help 27 young ladies be proud and truly focused on their education.  By next year, I plan to build the Bisonette organization to 45 girls. That will be wonderful!

Sincerely,
Ms. Laura Linda Cervera
Bisonette Director

Do we know who maintains your class information?

The Sunset Alumni Association started compiling a list showing the Contact Person for each graduating class at Sunset.  That's over 80 classes!  We've been able to locate many, but have had a tough time finding several others.  The Class Contact Person is usually (but not always) a class officer who maintains the contact information for their class to be used for reunions or just information about their class.  Below is a list of classes in which we have been unable to locate their contact person.  If you are the Contact Person for one of the classes listed below or know who the person is who does that, please contact us at sunsetalumni@sbcglobal.net .  THANKS!
