Sunset High School tops in nation in 2007 AP Spanish exam success
The College Board has recognized Sunset High School as one of four schools in the country that in 2006 led the nation in helping the widest segment of their student population achieve a grade of 3 or higher in the Advanced Placement Spanish language exam. A grade of 5 is the highest on an AP exam.
Sunset was tops in the large-size school category, which are schools with 800 or more students in grades 10 through 12.
The school’s AP teachers who helped Sunset achieve this success are Thomas Spring, Dales Reeves, and Joe Reyes.
Ribbon Cutting for New Wing & Student Entrance
January 19, 2006
Sunset High School hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the addition of a new wing of classrooms at the school.
The school, which was built in 1925, has been the alma mater for many community leaders such as DISD Superintendent, Dr. Michael Hinojosa ('75), who attended the event.
Also among the guests was State Representative Roberto Alonzo. Activities included a ribbon-cutting, reception, tours, along with outstanding performances by the Varsity Cheerleaders and Bison Choir. Our Bisonettes were also there in all their charm.
The new wing is located on the south east corner of the school where the old Service Entrance & the Pecan Grove was. Part of the west side of the Pecan Grove is still there. The new wing and student entrance was part of the $1.37 billion bond program approved by Dallas’ voters in 2002. The main entrance is still on Jefferson Blvd.
The school’s 49,000-square-foot addition adds 20 core classrooms, four art classrooms, offices, band hall, practice rooms, storage rooms, dance studio and a drama classroom.
Currently, Sunset High School houses more than 2,000 students. The school principal is Emilio Castro.

Thanks to the efforts and perservance of Don Martin, Class of 1952
and those who contributed to the restoration.
You may not remember the Sanger Trophy, but it was awarded each year to the Dallas high school with the best overall sports achievement for the year. It was sponsored by Sanger Brothers Department Store. Sunset won it three years in a row and was awarded permanent possession. It sat proudly in our main trophy case for many years. Someone dumped all the trophies into the boiler room where they lay unprotected for years. Some were smashed and all were arbitrarily tossed out without any thought to their historical or sentimental value. The only exceptions were the Sanger Trophy and the State Football trophy that Sunset won. After noticing that the Sanger Trophy was not in the trophy case, someone initiated a search for it. It was rescued and sent out for repairs. A fund to pay for the restoration was started and the Classes of 1938 - 1946 group donated $600 toward the restoration. The Sunset Alumni Association also made a donation of $200. Don Martin '52 and Sonny Kemble '42 handled the restoration and the trophy is ready for display again.
The Sanger Trophy now stands proudly in its' new permanent home at the Old Red Courthouse Museum in downtown Dallas. A trophy of its' distinction deserves this wider viewing audience and now is better protected.

Looking for copies of a few Sundials
The library at Sunset has a copy of every Sundial year book ever printed except for three years. Our Alumni Association is helping to get the word out so these three year books can be replaced. If you have a copy of either a 1958, 1979 or 1997 Sundial that you would like to donate to the library, please contact us as sunsetalumni@sbcglobal.net.
